Phytogenic Feed Additives: Their Role in Animal Nutrition
Abstract
Phytogenic feed additives are used to improve feed quality, support growth and improve animal health. These additives have antimicrobial, antioxidant and gut-flora-regulating properties. Phytogenic compounds offer a safe and economical alternative as feed additives. The use of these feed additives, which are safe and of high nutritional quality, is very important for optimum animal performance. With the decrease in the use of antibiotics, phytogenic feed additives are becoming more preferred. Plants such as thyme, mint and basil improve growth performance and feed conversion in poultry. Turmeric has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The appropriate dosage of phytogenic feed additives is still unclear. Differences in the conditions under which plants grow in different regions make this difficult. However, these additives are considered to be safe and environmentally friendly alternatives. Plants such as cinnamon, thyme and cloves improve digestion by increasing the palatability of the feed. Essential oils have a positive effect on the activity of digestive enzymes. Phytogenic feed additives improve weight gain and feed conversion in chickens. Garlic, thyme and cornflower supplements also show positive effects. As a result, phytogenic feed additives are becoming increasingly popular in the feed industry as they improve animal performance, the immune system and feed palatability. As natural compounds of plant origin, these substances offer safe and healthy alternatives.
